gabriela Galván
Gabriela Galván is a multidisciplinary artist interested in exploring the concept of transformation through formal meditations on everyday objects. Spanning the genres of public art, interactive installation, sculpture, performance, drawing and design, Galván aims to encourage an open exchange of ideas and experiences among people of different cultures and generations. Her creative process is driven by extensive research on the materials and contexts of the sites where she works, and the exploration and experimentation with open ideas and collaboration during the development of each project she produces.
Galván’s work has been shown internationally at Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofía, Zacheta National Gallery, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, and at the Haydee Rovirosa Gallery in New York. In her native country, her work has been shown at Museo Tamayo, Museo de Arte Moderno, and Museo de la Ciudad de México (in collaboration with the Centre George Pompidou). Her public projects include "Aquatic Random" at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in New York. She has received grants in New York from Residency Unlimited in collaboration with Atelier Mondial in Switzerland, and from The Rema Hort Mann Foundation, and in Mexico from the Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo and the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA). Galván has participated in residencies at the Fundación Casa Wabi (Mexico), OMI International Arts Center (New York), and the International Studio & Curatorial Program of New York.
In keeping with her interest in expanding intergenerational awareness and community dialogue, Galván has found a second vocation in her professional practice as an art educator. She teaches at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, where she has developed international projects in collaboration with the Museum at FIT. She also has taught in various art education programs, including those of the Brooklyn College Community Partnership Program, the Dedalus Foundation, and the BRIC Arts and Media Education Program. Galvan was born in Mexico City and has lived and worked in New York City for the past 14 years.
